The Pear Tree at Purton is a modern wedding venue just outside Swindon, on the Wiltshire edge of the Cotswolds, all glass and light and manicured gardens, with a vineyard, a lake and honey-coloured stone to photograph against. Emily and Paul got married here in the spring, and it was my first time shooting at the venue.
This is their full day at The Pear Tree, from the morning preparations in the Cascade right through to the band and the dance floor. I like to arrive a couple of hours before the ceremony, and at The Pear Tree that meant a slow walk round the grounds first, scoping out where we would take the portraits later, past the vineyard and the gardens still fresh with spring. Then up to the Cascade to find Emily.
It is a lovely room to shoot in, floor-length mirrors, individual dressing tables and light pouring in, so I could hang back and let the hair and makeup team work while I picked off the details: the dress, the shoes, the rings and the bouquet. Paul and the groomsmen were getting ready too, cufflinks and buttonholes and the usual pre-wedding nerves settled with a bit of laughing. By the time Emily was in her dress, everyone was ready.

By the time everyone had gathered, Paul was at the front with his best man, turning to the doors more than once while we waited for Emily. There is always a stillness to that moment, and I hang back for it rather than direct anything.
Emily came in and the room turned with her. I stayed at the edge and let the ceremony run its course: the vows, the rings, the quiet look between them while the registrar spoke. A guest leaned out to catch a frame of their own, which is exactly the sort of small, honest moment I keep. By the time they signed the register they were married, and the whole room felt it.

Then everyone spilled outside. There is a lovely stretch after a ceremony where nothing is scheduled and the day just breathes, and at The Pear Tree that meant confetti on the path, cold champagne going round, and Emily and Paul finally getting a minute to stand still in it. I worked the edges, catching the hugs and the quiet asides while the team turned the room over behind us, the tables dressed and the light settling in for the meal to come.

Stage 04 / Portraits
The Portraits at The Pear Tree
Out in the grounds, just the two of them.
We slipped away for twenty minutes while the guests had their drinks. The Pear Tree has the vineyard and the gardens I had scouted that morning, so we did not have to go far. I keep this part loose: a walk, a quiet word, the odd gentle prompt, and mostly just letting Emily and Paul be with each other while I work around them. The light was soft and low by then, and it did most of the job for me.
Stage 05 / Speeches

Laughter, a few tears, and full glasses.
After the meal we moved into the speeches. Paul went first, then the fathers and the best man, and it went the way the good ones do: a few nerves at the start, a couple of stories nobody had heard before, and Emily laughing and welling up in equal measure. I stay low and to the side for these, close enough to catch the reactions on the top table, which is usually where the real moment is.
Stage 06 / Evening
The Evening at The Pear Tree
First dance, and the room lets go.
They kept the first dance simple, the two of them and the whole room ringed around, and then it turned into the sort of party you hope for: the floor full all night, a live guitarist early on, the cake cut somewhere in the middle of it. I stay until the light is all warm bulbs and low sun through the windows, working the dance floor for the laughing and the mess of it. By the end everyone was in, which is exactly how it should finish.

The Pear Tree is a country house that knows how to hold a wedding. The gardens and the vineyard give you portraits a few minutes from the door, the Blossom room fills with soft light for the ceremony, and being exclusive use with eighteen rooms on site means the whole day happens in one place, at your own pace. Just outside Swindon, it is one of the loveliest wedding venues in Wiltshire, and it carries a day beautifully from the quiet of the morning through to a full dance floor.
