Claire & Josh, a winter wedding at The Mill Barns
The Mill Barns is a modern, exclusive-use barn venue at Alveley, near Bridgnorth in Shropshire, built around a mill pond with water and landscaped gardens on every side. It is one of my favourite venues to photograph in the county: clean lines, big windows and a lot of natural light, with the water giving you something most barns cannot.
This is Claire and Josh’s wedding at The Mill Barns, photographed on a crisp day in November, from the morning preparations right through to the first dance. Stage 01 / Bridal Preparations
Bridal Preparations at The Mill Barns
A calm winter morning at the mill.
I usually arrive a couple of hours before the ceremony, and at The Mill Barns that meant walking in past the Christmas tree and the empty ceremony barn, chairs set out, everything quiet before the day properly started. It was late November, so the light was low and soft, exactly what I like for getting-ready photos.
Claire was upstairs with her bridal party, hair and makeup underway and the room busy in the best way. I took the dress, the shoes and the details while the makeup was finished, then a few candid frames as the girls got ready in their pyjamas. While Claire was getting into her dress I headed over to find Josh and the groomsmen, who were having a beer and settling the nerves before guests arrived.
Stage 02 / The Ceremony

When the ceremony barn filled up, I took my spot next to Josh at the front. The Mill Barns’ ceremony room is one of the best-lit I photograph in, floor-to-ceiling windows down one side, so even on a grey November afternoon there was plenty of soft light to work with.
Claire came in with her mum, and the look on Josh’s face when he turned round is the kind of frame I am always hoping for. From there it was the usual mix of the day: a few tears, a lot of laughter, the rings, and the vows carrying clearly across the room thanks to a microphone on the registrar’s table, a small thing most guests never notice but it makes all the difference. Paperwork signed, and the two of them walked back out married, straight into a wall of confetti.
Stage 03 / Drinks Reception

After the confetti we headed out onto the walkway over the water for a few quiet frames of the two of them, and this is where Claire had a surprise up her sleeve. She had arranged for their dog to be brought along to the wedding, dickie bow and all, and the look on Josh’s face when he realised is one of my favourite frames of the whole day. There were more than a few tears.
The Mill Barns is dog-friendly, which not every venue is, and it made for one of the most genuine moments of the day. After that everyone drifted onto the Mill Pond Terrace, a string quartet playing by the entrance, drinks going round, and the water and gardens doing exactly what they are there for. A cold, bright November afternoon, and not a drop of rain.

Stage 04 / Portraits & Groups
Portraits & Groups at The Mill Barns
Out across the water and the gardens.
We did the group shots at the front of the venue, the crisp, modern lines of the building making a clean backdrop, and I keep these quick, ten or fifteen minutes and a short list, so nobody misses the party. Then I stole Claire and Josh away for their portraits.
This is where The Mill Barns earns its keep. There are eight acres to play with, the water features, the mill pond and the gardens, so you are never short of somewhere to go. I am not one for stiff posing, so mostly I give a little direction and let the two of them be themselves, and if anyone feels awkward in front of the camera I have plenty of small tricks to loosen things up. Even on a cold November afternoon it was worth every minute.
Stage 05 / Breakfast & Speeches
Breakfast & Speeches at The Mill Barns
Three courses, a string quartet, and a few words.
Before the wedding breakfast I ducked into the barn to photograph the room while it was still empty, tables set and everything ready. Then the doors opened, the string quartet moved through to play, and everyone sat down for three courses. The food at The Mill Barns is genuinely some of the best I have eaten at a wedding, and yes, I got to try it while I went back over the morning’s photos and swapped a battery or two.
Then the speeches, which are always my favourite unknown of the day. You never quite know whether you are getting the tears, the jokes or a full choreographed routine, and with Claire and Josh it was a proper mix, the room laughing one minute and welling up the next.
Stage 06 / Evening Reception
The Evening Reception at The Mill Barns
A November night, and the party in full swing.
As the light went and the evening guests arrived, an acoustic duo set up beside the Christmas tree and the whole barn shifted into party mode. There is onsite accommodation too, so nobody had to worry about getting home, which always keeps a wedding going later.
The Mill Barns is exclusive use, so it was only ever Claire and Josh’s people in the building, no strangers wandering through, not even Santa in December. After the cake it was the first dance, the room gathered round, and then the floor filled up. This is the part of the day I stay loose for, when the quietest guests turn into the ones throwing the biggest shapes, and I chase it round the room until it is time to say goodnight.

The Mill Barns is a modern barn done right. The water and the gardens give you portraits you would not get anywhere else nearby, the ceremony barn is full of light, and being exclusive use with rooms on site means the whole day happens in one place, at your own pace. As a wedding venue it is one of the best in Shropshire, and it photographs beautifully in any season, winter included.
