Shustoke Barn Wedding Photographer
Kerry and Ian’s intimate summer wedding in the Warwickshire countryside
Stage 01 / Bridal Preps
Bridal Preps at Shustoke Barn
My day started at Kerry’s house, where she was getting ready with her bridesmaids in the most relaxed way possible. No panic, no drama, just hair and makeup underway, dresses hanging by the window, and the odd glass of champagne doing the rounds. This is my favourite kind of Shustoke Barn wedding photography, the quiet documentary hour before anything official happens, when the shoes come out of the box and someone inevitably cries at the flowers.

Kerry even took a turn on bridesmaid duty herself, pinning hair between her own makeup sittings. Once everyone was ready we stepped into the garden for a few group photos with the bouquets, then made our way over to the barn.

Stage 03 / The Ceremony
The Ceremony at Shustoke Barn
I slipped into the ceremony room and took my place near Ian just in time to catch Kerry being walked down the aisle by her son. A barn ceremony gives a wedding photographer everything to work with, natural light pouring through, high ceilings, exposed beams, and forty faces all turned the same way.

The ceremony itself was short and full of warmth, hands held the whole way through. Civil ceremonies at Shustoke Barn happen right in the heart of the old building, and with an intimate guest list like this one, every reaction in the room is close enough to catch.

Rings on, first kiss done, and half the room raised their phones to capture it. I love those meta-moments, photographing the people photographing the couple, because that is exactly what a documentary barn wedding photographer is there for, the reactions as much as the main event.

Register signed, and Mr and Mrs walked back up the aisle to a wall of cheers before spilling out into the courtyard, where a line of guests and a lot of confetti were waiting for them.

Stage 04 / Drinks Reception
The Drinks Reception at Shustoke Barn
Everyone spilled out into the courtyard, and if you have not seen this corner of the Shustoke wedding venue yet, it is worth the visit alone. Fire pits, plenty of seating and olive trees that make it feel closer to an Italian piazza than a spot just off the Coleshill road. While drinks went round, the wedding magician, Close-Up Chris, worked the crowd, which is a gift for any photographer, because every trick lands as a genuine reaction and the camera just has to be pointing the right way.

The magician saved a special set for Kerry and Ian themselves, and watching the bride try to work out how he did it was one of my favourite moments of the afternoon. I stole the wedding party away for a few portraits between tricks, then let the couple get back to their guests.
While everyone was outside, the Shustoke staff quietly transformed the barn for the wedding breakfast. Stepping back inside to find the tables dressed and glowing is always a treat, and I made sure to photograph the details on each table before the guests were called in. If table styling is high on your list, this venue gives you plenty to work with, take a look at my guide to wedding detail photos for what I look for on every table.

Group Shots at Shustoke Barn
We headed to the front of the venue for the group photos, with the main barn as the backdrop and the cypress trees lending the whole scene a distinctly Italian feel. Group shots are the most traditional part of my barn wedding photography, and I keep them short and sweet on purpose. Not everyone loves posing, so I guide people through quickly, get the combinations that matter, and hand everyone back to the bubbly and canapes. The sooner the formal list is done, the sooner the natural, candid moments come back, and those are the ones couples end up framing.

With forty guests, the full group photos come together quickly, and looking down the line at everyone Kerry and Ian love most, gathered in one frame in front of the barn, is exactly why these shots earn their place on the list.

In between the bigger set-ups I pulled Kerry and Ian aside for a few portraits of their own, plus a couple of quieter frames, Ian looking sharp, and Kerry showing off the lucky charm she carried down the aisle. Small details like that are easy to miss on the day and lovely to have afterwards.
Stage 06 / The Speeches
Speeches at Shustoke Barn
Laughter, a few tears, and the barn at its best.
Before the speeches, guests worked through a meal that lived up to the Cripps reputation, and I was kindly fed too, eating in style out by the olive trees while the weather held. Then the champagne was poured, the room settled, and the speeches began.

Speeches are where I earn my keep as a documentary photographer, because you cannot pose a reaction like these. Kerry went from tears to laughter and back again, and every one of those expressions is now hers to keep. That was my cue to bow out, as the barn began its turnaround for the evening party and the first dance.

In Closing
Final Thoughts on Shustoke Barn Wedding Photos
There are venues I photograph once and venues I hope to keep coming back to, and Shustoke Barn sits firmly in the second group. As a Shustoke Barn wedding venue for smaller celebrations it is hard to fault, the courtyard does the drinks reception for you, the ceremony room needs no dressing up, and the light inside that old barn makes every frame easier. And you do not have to take my word for it, the Shustoke Barn reviews from couples who have married there tell the same story.
Kerry and Ian’s day was proof that an intimate wedding loses nothing for being small. Forty guests, one gorgeous barn, and a set of wedding photos full of the people they love most.
The best barn weddings are not the biggest ones. They are the ones where every guest matters.
If you are still choosing your venue, it is worth seeing how a day unfolds at more than one, this post from a wedding at Mythe Barn makes a good comparison. And if Shustoke is already booked and you have got questions, please get in touch, I would love to hear about your plans.
